School Newsletter 20

Dear Parents/Carers,

It is good to see everyone back at school following the half term holiday. There is lots of information in today’s Newsletter as well as requests for help and opportunities for you to have your say. Establishing and embedding links with you, our parents, is a priority for us in school as we firmly believe that this partnership is an integral part of the whole school success, so please be an active parent and help us in any way you can.

Parents’ Evening – Ofsted
Many thanks to the parents who attended this very important meeting. Thanks also to those parents who sent apologies. The meeting was, on the whole, a very positive one. As requested, the power-point presentation is available on the website for those parents who were unable to attend. The views of the parents were sought regarding the Action Plan for improvement and parents were also given the opportunity to raise any concerns they had. A range of concerns were raised and these will be addressed in the ‘You commented’ ‘We are doing/have done’ speech bubbles which will become a weekly feature on the Newsletter.

Lent
On Wednesday Mr and Mrs Harvey led an Assembly about Lent. The CAFOD slogan this year is ‘Give It Up!’ The money that you save from giving up chocolate, crisps, magazines etc can then be donated to CAFOD. We have collection boxes in school and would very much like to encourage the children to donate their money to CAFOD. This money will be used to build shelters, provide water pumps in villages, buy bicycles and support villages to grow their own vegetables. Your support for this very worthy charity is encouraged and welcomed.

Lenten Display – Have you noticed the beautiful display in the main Reception? Come in and have a look – everyone welcome!

We will be having a mass on Tuesday 9th March at 9:15am to reflect on the importance of Lent and all welcome, please join us – Mrs Pollard

Pie Corbett
On Wednesday class 5CS were lucky enough to be taught Literacy by poet and author Pie Corbett. It was a great experience and Y5 wrote some imaginative poetry. Here is a verse by Erik:
In the place of loveliness, lullaby songs sing with the beautiful light of rainbows
Merlin
Year 5 children have begun to use Merlin, an online learning platform that allows users to log on to their own personal learning space in school and at home. Both classes have taken part in online discussions, saved their homework online for their teacher’s to access, and followed links to websites to help them with their class work. Both classes have
shown great enthusiasm for this new way of learning. All children in KS1 and KS2 will gain access to Merlin within the next year.
“Merlin is a great opportunity for children to make learning fun” Roisin.
“On Merlin you can make an avatar of yourself, change your desktop and take part in class discussions.” Cosimo
“It is great fun because you can change your own password, avatar and desktop.” Michael

Free Family Learning!
Gloucestershire College of Education are offering free courses in Literacy and Numeracy here at St Peter’s Catholic Primary School in our Parent Link Room! The aim of the courses is to improve parents own skills in order to support the learning of their children. It is part of the Skills for Life and a certificate can be awarded on completion of the course if you so wish. The Tutors will tailor the course to the level and need of the parents/carers taking part. We will hopefully begin the course as soon as possible but this will depend on how many parents/carers respond. We may be able to offer a Crèche for those that need it. If you are interested in taking part in the course, please complete the slip at the end of the newsletter and return it to school. I must stress this is a great opportunity to learn for FREE!

Parent Power Parenting Course
Our course has begun and will take place each Thursday afternoon between 1.00 – 3.00pm in the Parent Link Room situated at the end of KS2 Playground. The course will continue until April with the last session being Thursday 1st April! Please feel free to come along to these excellent sessions. Tea & coffee is available and we look forward to seeing those who have already begun the course and those about to!

Book Fair and World Book Day
To celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 6th March, St Peter’s is hosting a Book Fair between Friday 5th March and Wednesday 10th March. Your child has been given a leaflet to bring home showing the books that will be available to buy during this Book Fair. Each child will have an opportunity to buy books during school time as each class has been allocated a period during the school day to visit the Fair to look at the books and, should they wish, to buy books. In addition, the Book Fair will be open to both Parents and Children after school from 2.45 to 4.15 on the Friday 5th, Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th March. Buying a book is, of course, purely optional.

Each child will also be given a £1 Book Token to celebrate World Book Day and these tokens can be used in part payment for any book purchased during the Book Fair. The School will receive 30% commission on the total sales, which will be used to buy books for the school.

School Nurse
Pam Dickerson, our School Nurse, will be holding a drop-in for all parents and carers on Thursday 4th March between 8.30-9.30am in the Parent Link Room.

FRIDAY 12TH FEBRUARY – B TEAM v ROBINSWOOD (HOME)
ST.PETER’S 8 ROBINSWOOD 1
Scorers: Alfie (2), Ethan (2), Emile, Kenneth and Erik + OG. This was the game in which all the great chances the team has been making finally flew in! Iwan had his best game in defence, Erik grabbed his first goal and our two strikers scored two each – now for the Knockout Cup!
C TEAM v ROBINSWOOD (HOME)
ST. PETER’S 1 ROBINSWOOD 0
In a very tight match, a Joseph goal proved the difference. Captain Tristan played well in the middle, as did Liam at the back, while Patrick had his best game, tackling well and running strongly with the ball.
THURSDAY, 25TH FEBRUARY – A TEAM v DINGLEWELL (KO CUP Rd 1, 1STLeg)
ST. PETER’S 1 DINGLEWELL 2
Despite wet conditions, the match was full of skill and great passing. Our team began quickly, with Callum’s pace creating most of our early openings. After ten minutes, however, a breakaway saw our visitors taking the lead with a well- worked goal.
Not to be outdone, after good work from captain Elijah, James popped up to level the score, finishing off a neat passing move.
The second half was even, with players from both sides narrowly failing to take the many chances, until Dinglewell broke the deadlock with a few minutes remaining. Still time, however, for Leo in goal to make a full-length save at the foot of the post and maintain the narrow deficit which our players will be hoping to reverse next week in the away leg. Kyran’s calm skill started many attacking moves. Michael, who, due to injuries, was required to play in three different positions – all of which he filled strongly.
